Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales

Literally meaning the Monastery of Barefoot Royals, the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales is situated in the former palace of Carlos I and Isabel of Portugal. The monastery was founded by the coupleís daughter, Joan of Spain, in 1557. The monastery grew to become one of the richest in the country thanks to expensive dowries brought by noblewomen seeking love in Christ. At one point in time, the structure was considered one of Madridís most mysterious buildings. Today, its once secret halls are now open to the public with tours given daily. The dowries can still be found in the Reliquary. The monastery claims to hold pieces of Christís cross and the bones of Saint Sebastian. Other priceless masterpieces include Titanís Caesarís Money and art by Hans de Beken.
